April 28, 2008Protest Art Spports Parkway
In an innovative approach using art to bring attention to community issues, students in Professor Debora Myles' Drawing 2 Classes have begun a new project that addresses the impact of commercial development along Shell Toomer Parkway. Shell Toomer Parkway is the entrance to Chewacla State Park and is often described as one of Alabama's most scenic roadways. The assignment requires each student to research and learn about the development proposals and subsequent changes to Shell Toomer Parkway. Each student will create an artwork to communicate their reaction to the information they have gathered. The artwork will be displayed across Auburn University and the Auburn Community in order to bring attention to the impact of the development and encourage the involvement of Auburn students and citizens in the process.
The projects will culminate at the Tuesday, May 6 City Council meeting where the students will wear T-shirts they have designed in connection with the project and express their opinions to the local council representatives.
